Deep Way
A downloadable game for Windows and Android
This is a video game prototype I developed in late 2019 using GameMaker to test a mechanic I had in mind.
The game generates a random maze by placing the character at the starting point of the path generation and setting the exit at the last position generated. There's also another mechanic worth mentioning: the game raises or lowers the volume of a specific sound to give the player a sense of how close or far they are from the exit.
Since it was a simple project made in just a few days, I didn't get to develop a deep story or any real progression within the game — the only choice available is a difficulty level, which makes the game generate larger or smaller mazes. As for the story, I did have something in mind, but because the game was so simple, I limited myself to placing text, images, and scenes randomly, so the player could piece together an idea of the story on their own.
The story I had in mind followed a character searching for his wife, with whom he had once been trapped in a cult that gathered in a forest at the foot of a hill. He managed to escape, but she wasn't allowed to. Going back for her, he found himself trapped in the forest, unable to escape or find her.
Based on this prototype, I started developing a much more complete game, currently titled Eternal Heist. The story is completely different, but it keeps the core idea of moving through randomly generated paths in search of an exit.
